APPOMATTOX HISTORY WEEKEND 2010

On April 9th and 10th, 2010 the Appomattox Historical Society and the Appomattox United Daughters of the Confederacy joined forces once again for their Second Annual Appomattox History Weekend. The weekend started on Friday with school days as we welcomed school groups and lots of individual children for living history dating back prior to the Civil War. The children were  taught about Wesley Chapel, built in the early 1800’s, the one room schoolhouse built in the late 1800’s, Blacksmith’s Shops and the Martin log cabin. The children had the honor of meeting Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant and see 100’s of reenactors set up camp.

On Saturday the park was open to all visitors and presented living history that cannot be forgotten. The day started with an address to the residents from the Virginia Governor in 1865, Mr. William “Extra Billy” Smith. Following the address the reenactments of the Last War Counsel with Generals Lee, Gordon, and Alexander, A Skirmish of the Confederates attempting to break through the Union lines, The Meeting of Lee and Grant, Lee’s Farwell to the troops, the Stacking of the Arms and the lowering of the colors took place. The days activities concluded with a question and answer session with visitors and Lee and his Lieutenants and Grant and the Federal General Corp.

On Sunday morning a period church service was held at the Wesley Chapel followed at 2:00 by the Memorial Service at the Appomattox Confederate Cemetery.
