On Saturday April 5, 2014, The Appomarttox Chapter United Daughters of the
Confederacy held an Iron Cross Dedication Service to honor Colonel George W. Abbitt for his service to the Confederate Army.
This service was held at the Abbitt family homeplace Gravel Knoll. Mr. Abbitt is the ancestor of UDC member Stella Osborne .
Mr. Abbitt was born June 19, 1826, in Appomattox and was a farmer who enlisted in the Confederate Army on June 19, 1861. He
served in Company B, 46th Virginia Infantry first, as a 2nd Lieutenant, then as a Captain. Colonel Abbitt died on June 25,
1912 and is buried at Gravel Knoll Cemetery, Appomattox County, Virginia.
