On April
7, the Appomattox Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy held its annual Memorial Service at the Confederate
Cemetery. Special guest speaker was Mr. Christian
Godart, one of Lee’s Lieutenants, who portrays Lt. General Richard Ewell. Other
guests that took part in the annual program were Mr. Stan Clardy, Southern Junction, and Virginia Division President, Suzanne
Townsend.
The Appomattox
Courthouse Rangers Sons of Confederate Veterans and other surrounding VA SCV camps presented the Color Guard and Musket Salute.
Wreaths were presented from Capt. Sally Tompkins Chapter, Southern Cross Chapter, Loudoun Chapter, H.A. Carrington Chapter,
Kirkwood Otey Chapter, Elliot Grays Chapter, Jubal Early Chapter, and the Appomattox Chapter, along with wreaths presented
from Napoleon Bonaparte Ponton Camp and the Charlotte County Grays SCV camp. Laural
Williams, Faith Daniels, and guest Carleigh Shook presented the programs and Mr. Jesse Osborne played taps.
We presented each Confederate soldier’s grave with a flag as well as an American Flag to the one Union soldier
who is laid to rest here. Flowers were also presented to every soldier as a reminder to all for their sacrifices and service
that was made during those four long years.
The program was filled with music, poetry, songs, and wreath lying to honor these soldiers who fought for their country
and a cause they believed in.
